Dummkopf of the Week…
Posted by Grand Méchant Loup in Everyday, Social Discourse, Sport on March 10, 2011
When a German says something remotely controversial, all hell breaks loose. When somebody else does something so obviously bad that it demands a public horse-whipping, it’s somehow just a “gaffe” that elicits a litany of scarcely believeable excuses. Read the rest of this entry »
It’s not racist, it’s rubbish.

Its president described poor old Paul the Octopus as a “symbol of decadence and decay”, and now its Olympic committee have suggested that the logo for the London 2012 games spells the word “Zion”. Yes, it’s our friends from Eye-ran again. I suppose one could see where they are coming from, though only if one were to consume the same blend of exotic herbs as the designer had when he found the inspiration to create this monstrosity. Milan and Masterchef

Nope, I am not fashioning a recipe for a new pasta or pizza dish, though yesterday I did turn out a rather marvellous roast pheasant – which only needed a bit of butter to crisp up the skin and a smattering of Braai salt with Lemon Pepper. Tip to all you Saffers out there: Braai salt is not just for the Braai, it works bloody marvellously on almost everything. Read the rest of this entry »
Quitting Qatar
Posted by Grand Méchant Loup in News, Sport on January 14, 2011
I had always thought FIFA’s decision to award the 2022 World Cup to the back-of-beyond slave-state of Qatar was bizarre: a decision motivated by money rather than what the event is all about. Promoted as an attempt to widen the boundaries of the wonderful game – or something – this bunch of bureaucratic muppets decide to award football’s biggest event to a sheikdom whose team has never even come close to qualifying for the event, a plot of desert with a seat at the UN completely unsuited to accommodating – and entertaining – hundreds of thousands of people from around the world. World Cup Review
Posted by Grand Méchant Loup in Sport on July 12, 2010
The World Cup is over: a it’s time for a quick review of all the teams. Unsurprisingly, I have given Germany the highest score out of ten, though this has nothing to do with my being biased. They were genuinely good, and in many pundits’ opinion the most exciting and dynamic team of the tournament. How things have changed from the disaster of 1998, where I would have given them a big fat zero. Or Euro 2000, where they meritted no better than minus ten. Read the rest of this entry »
Und es ist vorbei.

And so, it came to an end – stifled by a scarily impressive Spanish side that pulled yet another trick out of its impressive bag by swinging in a very old-fashioned corner and having their old-fashioned centre-back smash in an old-fashioned header. Well, we all knew better than to question Paul der Kraken-Orakel. Read the rest of this entry »
World Cup Update…
Posted by Grand Méchant Loup in News, Sport on July 6, 2010
I have tried my best to keep schtum during the last week, given how much I have been impressed by the young German team’s progress at this World Cup. Since my last blog, they have banged in eight goals en route to their third semi-final in a row and eleventh in all, beating England 4-1 in what was the mother of all media-fuelled weekends and then Argentina 4-0 where everyone bar Alan Hansen finally took note. Daily Mail (World Cup) Story of the Week
Posted by Grand Méchant Loup in DM Nazi Story of the Week, News, Sport on June 25, 2010
No Daily Mail Nazi Story of the Week this week – OK, there was a pointless story about Hitler ordering a high-spec Mercedes from his cell at Landsberg) – but their latest World Cup dossier on the German team certainly ranks right up there in the bullshit for the sake of it stakes. In it for another week at least…

A few things to talk about today.
Germany are through to the second round of the World Cup following a cracking strike by Mesut Özil to beat a tough and very spirited Ghana side. Good news also that Serbia are on their way back home, having lost 2-1 to the unlucky Aussies. All in all a fairly balanced group, with Germany’s 4-0 thrashing of the Socceroos being put into better perspective with subsequent results. Read the rest of this entry »
