The Accidental Journalist

The Accidental Journalist

Balpreet Kaur, a religiously bearded Sikh female student at Ohio State University, was minding her own business at an airport when some passer-by noted her somewhat strange appearance – yes, admit it, we’ve all laughed at the bearded lady jokes – and rather than just having a silent chuckle and getting on with his life decided to post it on the social media site Reddit.

Cue an avalanche of responses from angry Sikhs, a suitably grovelling public apology from the contrite and now religiously- and culturally-aware offender, and what amounts to sudden and unexpected fame for the erstwhile victim of this rather lame comedy-gone-wrong moment.

Hmm.

Hmm.

Well OK, I get it. The idiot is make to look like a bigger idiot, and the differently hirsute Ms Kaur suddenly becomes semi-famous in the wacky world of the tittle-tattle blogosphere. So famous in fact that she is asked by the Guardian to write a piece about the curious appearance of a “mustachioed, yet large-mammaried” Sikh girl in J. K. Rowling’s somewhat overhyped new novel The Casual Vacancy.

So there we have it, folks. The silly story of the accidental journalist and the media-appointed herald of modern English literature.
