Website Links

While this site is largely based around my blog musings, I have also over the years created a number of other specialist websites, some of which are still works in progress. In more than a decade as a front-end specialist I have coded templates for a variety of companies from small start-ups to large multi-nationals, but the ones I am most proud of are those where I have done more than just mark up the templates – a selection can be found below.

Schwarz und Weiß

Schwarz und Weiß
www.schwarzundweiss.co.uk

Schwarz und Weiß is an ongoing project dedicated to the German national football team, something that started out as little more than an idea for a microsite on the teams shirts over the years. This one small series of pages quickly expanded to include detailed statistics, pen-portraits of coaches and key players, complete tournament reports – including individual match reports from the 1986 World Cup onwards – a dedicated blog and other trivia.

There are more than two-hundred pages of content, and the plan is to finish the key areas of the site in time for the 2012 European Championship – with the aim of using a small section for an accompanying book. The site is also supported by a Facebook group and Twitter feed which is mainly used to provide team selection details and live commentary during matches.

Panzer Ace: Michael Wittmann

Panzer Ace
www.panzerace.net

Panzer Ace is one of my oldest and most successful historical projects, dating back some twelve years when it first hit the ‘net as a three-page write-up on Michael Wittmann – arguably the most prolific tank commander of the Second World War. Over the years the site has benefited from an array of visitors, who have contributed everything from funds and support through to articles and assistance with translation work.

Having achieved an excellent ranking with the leading search engines, Panzer Ace is one of the most thorough and well-established historical biographies on the Web, and has been a valuable resource for a number of other off- and online projects. The site also has an online forum and associated Facebook group, where visitors can discuss and share opinions. There is also a small German-language section.

U47: Günther Prien

U47: Günther Prien
www.u47.org

The site dedicated to the Second World War submarine U47 and its skipper Günther Prien stands alongside Panzer Ace as one of the most detailed historical biographies on the Web. Like its sister site it all started out as a very small project on Second World War “aces”, only to expand as more and more visitors cam back with additional information, articles and anecdotes.

Like Panzer Ace, U47.org has received a consistently high ranking from the key search engines and has for the last decade been seen as one of the key resources on the subject. As well as being used as a source for various documentaries and books, the u47.org has also been listed as a valued resource by the National Maritime Museum. There is a small Dutch-language section, and a full French translation is under way.

Das Kehlsteinhaus

Das Kehlsteinhaus
www.kehlsteinhaus.com

The third of my my historical sites, Das Kehlsteinhaus tells the story of the house built in the late 1930s for Adolf Hitler on the Kehlstein mountain. Detailing the history of the building of the road and the house itself, the site has been present on the Internet for over a decade as the leading resource on its subject in the English language – the perfect accompaniment for the official German site.

Following my latest visit to the Kehlsteinhaus this summer, more photographs are due to be added to the existing articles, and the site is also being translated into French. Like Panzer Ace and U47, Das Kehlsteinhaus has maintained an exceptional search engine ranking for a number of years, and has continued to provide a source of detailed information for English-speaking visitors.

Third Reich Stamps

Stamps of the Third Reich
www.reichstamps.com

As well as being a keen amateur historian I have for the best part of three decades been a collector of German stamps. Many non-Germans collect German stamps, and I discovered that there was little in the way of helpful information in English outside of the standard catalogues – a gap I hope to close with the development of this site which provides both a history of the stamps themselves and the stories behind them, from information on the subjects and designers.

Every stamp issued during the Third Reich period (1933-1945) will be covered in depth, and the site aims to be an interesting source of historical stories, information and trivia as well as a thorough philatelic resource for stamp collectors and enthusiasts of every level.
